Train for Your Commercial Pilot Certificate
Take your aviation career to new heights with a Commercial Pilot Certificate. Whether you dream of flying for an airline, working as a flight instructor, or pursuing other professional aviation opportunities, earning your commercial rating is the next big step.
What Is a Commercial Pilot Certificate?
A Commercial Pilot Certificate allows you to be compensated for your flying. This certification opens the door to careers such as aerial photography, charter services, corporate aviation, or even becoming a flight instructor. It is also a prerequisite for becoming an airline transport pilot.
How Many Hours Are Required?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires a minimum of 250 total flight hours to qualify for a Commercial Pilot Certificate. These hours include:
- 100 hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) time
- 50 hours of cross-country flight time
- 10 hours of instrument training
- 10 hours of training in a complex or turbine-powered aircraft
- Additional solo or supervised flight time focused on advanced maneuvers, navigation, and precision flying.
Students coming from a Private Pilot Certificate typically build on their existing flight hours during commercial training. Many students use this time to gain experience with diverse flight scenarios and conditions.
What Does the Process Look Like?
- Prerequisites: Before starting, you’ll need a Private Pilot Certificate and meet the minimum flight experience requirements.
- Ground School: This includes advanced aviation topics such as aerodynamics, commercial regulations, weather analysis, and navigation planning.
- Flight Training: Your instructor will focus on advanced maneuvers, including steep turns, chandelles, lazy eights, and emergency operations. You’ll also refine your cross-country and instrument flying skills.
- Written Exam: Similar to private pilot training, you’ll complete an FAA written knowledge test.
- Checkride: The final step is the practical test, which includes an oral exam and a flight test with an FAA examiner to demonstrate your proficiency.
